Top 6 Ways to Make your Family Portrait Session a Success

Let’s Make your Family Session a Success.

Planning for a portrait session can be stressful. And it can be especially stressful if you have little ones. The planning, the outfits, the hair (and Moms makeup), the herding your crew into the car and not trying to yell and be, “that Mom/Dad.” Raise your hand if you’ve been there! We certainly have. We see and feel you! ⠀

Here are our Top 6 Ways to Make your Family Portrait Session a Success:

1) Have everyone’s outfits ready to go 1 week before your session. This means no last minute stressing to see if Amazon will deliver that dress you ordered. Make sure everyone’s outfits actually fit, buttons are on, no rips/tears, stains, etc. Also please make sure shoes match the outfit and fit properly. ⠀

2) Bring a backup outfit for the little ones and maybe Dad too. You know someone will spill something on that brand new white dress! Murphy’s Law, my friend.⠀

3) Know the amount of time that it will take to get to your session location and then add another 10 minutes on to that time. Traffic, an accident, detour, etc - you never want to feel rushed because of things that are out of your control.⠀

4) Bring snacks and water. Let’s face it, a good bribe goes a long way. Also, during your session, it might be hot and we might be walking a little. Stay hydrated!⠀

5) Know what to expect before your session. Always make sure you are on the same page as your photographer. Don’t just assume because your last photographer did such and such, that your current photographer does the same thing. Ask questions!⠀

6) Keep an open mind and be ready to go with the flow. Timmy and Sally don’t want to smile for the camera - so okay instead of getting upset, let them play for a little while and then bring them back into the session. Remember kids are not use to a stranger with a camera in their face. You aren’t either. Give them time to feel comfortable and warm up.

Hopefully this helps to make your photography session a little less stressful! Tell us what you think! What are some of your tips that have worked for you? We’d love to hear them! ⠀
